Squadron History

History to date:

2050 Leyland Squadron started off as a detached flight (DF) of 341(Preston) Squadron sometime during the early 1960's, at which time they shared a hut with a local vet.

On 24th Math 1964 due to the large numbers attending the squadron, the DF was granted a Squadron status.

The new squadron was aquired from the Flyde coast and was errected on the present site. The squadron was opened on 18th November 1973

Over the years 2050 has been responsible for several other DF's. Such as Bamber Bridge, Garstang, and Hesketh Bank

Unfortuantely the building suffered a fire in 1991, forcing the squadron to close to have half the building refurbished.

The squadron has always been involved in the local community, for example Leyland has always took part in Ospray (a local night orienteering competition) and won the competition the first year it was introduced and went ont to represent the South Ribble in Shaddow (a National event)
At one point the squadron had a full pipe band which entered many events and always played at the Leyland Festival.
From the squadron many cadets have gone on to join the military such as RAF, Navy, Army, Marines, some of which had become officers in these organisations. Those ex-cadets that didnt go into the military, many of them have ended up with excellent careers. Such as working in the Police, becoming teachers, working for BAE etc.
